A classmate of mine from culinary school, Deniz, got married this week and we all pitched in (one course each) to throw the happy couple a dinner party last night at another classmate, Rebecca's, house. I was in charge of dessert and since Deniz requested cream puffs, I decided to make a croquembouche (a French cake made of cream puffs often served at weddings). I used chocolate, instead of the traditional caramel, to hold the thing together. Considering that it was my first attempt at making the conical dessert -- which, by the way, is hollow in the middle and is quite the architectural challenge -- I was very pleased.
Deniz is Turkish and had told us that in Turkey brides traditionally wear red, hence the color of bride's dress above.
